From dangerous heroic treatments to the popular use of home remedies, Julia’s records present a rare first hand account of a woman’s experience with Victorian medicine. In addition, Julia’s diaries provide detailed reports of the changing emotional and physical stages experienced during the deaths of her two sons from consumption. She reveals a mother’s instinct to do all in her power to save her children, but despite her best efforts, 19th century medicine is simply inadequate.
