Acknowledgments

This online exhibit was written by Josephine Bloodgood, HHS Director of Curatorial Affairs, adapting and expanding upon the original essay created to accompany the physical exhibit John Hasbrouck: “A Most Estimable Citizen,” held at the DuBois Fort Visitor Center, Historic Huguenot Street, June 3–27, 2017 and reinstalled April 28–June 10, 2018.

Sincere thanks to Carol Johnson, Coordinator, Haviland-Heidgerd Historical Collection (HHHC), Elting Memorial Library, for continuously supporting this research since 2017 and working through so many historical details. In recent years, Kate Hymes, poet, history enthusiast, and former Vice President of the Margaret Wade-Lewis Black History & Cultural Center (MWLC), shared, listened to, and discussed numerous ideas, which significantly helped to shape portions of this essay. Thanks as well to HHS staff members Donna Dixon, Beth Patkus, and Zachary Veith, as well as MWLC History Committee member Erin von Holdt-Gilbert, for reviewing and providing edits to the text.

Gratitude to those who helped with the 2017/2018 exhibit and essay, including former HHS Archivist/Librarian Carrie Allmendinger; Ellen Mosen James for generously sharing her unpublished research with me and providing feedback on a draft text; Derin Tanyol, James Merrell, Lou Roper, and A. J. Williams-Myers for their input and edits to the original essay; and to Margaret Stanne, HHHC Collections Manager, and Sue Stegen and Lisa Curtis, New Paltz Rural Cemetery, for their contributions. Michelle Biondolillo-Keessen designed the original exhibit panels that inspired the header image, while Jennifer Palmentiero and Zachary Spalding with Southeastern New York Library Resources Council provided essential technical support and assistance to complete the online exhibit.

Immense thanks to Liselle LaFrance, HHS President, and to the HHS Board of Trustees and Staff for their ongoing support. Most of the documents supporting this research are part of the New Paltz Historic Documents Projects, originally funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and currently supported in part by Robert D. L. Foundation, the Hasbrouck Family Association, and supporters of the Haviland-Heidgerd Historical Collection, Elting Memorial Library.
