Historic Preservation

Demolition of the Kingston Post Office, 1969.  Courtesy World Wide Web

The main Post Office was at Broadway and Prince Street in Midtown Kingston. Though entire blocks of Rondout were disappearing at virtually the same time, the outrage over the Post Office’s demolition is considered by many as inspiring the historic preservation movement in the City of Kingston.

Demonstration to save City Hall, 1975.  Collection of Friends of Historic Kingston

The Friends of Historic Kingston staged a demonstration to save the 1875 City Hall, which had been abandoned in the early 1970s in favor of the new one-story structure in Rondout. Among the IBMers who fought demolition were Jerry Leatherman, Paul Scogna, Lowell Thing, and John Weber.
