Whole Cloth, Whitework Quilts

A Whole cloth quilts is made from one large piece of fabric, which is traditionally white, but can be other colors. This type of quilt uses no patchwork or appliqué. Stippling, trapunto, cording and padding are often used to embellish the motif.

This quilt is an example of a whitework quilt, it was created by Mary Hay. This quilt was most likely made for her upcoming wedding to the future Reverend John Gosman, D. D. in 1807. John was to become the minister of the First Reformed Church of Kingston.
