1798 Tax Assessment

Tax Assessments would include the list of New Paltz residents who owned slaves and the number of slaves they owned. The 1798 Tax Assessment lists the names of the Superintendent, the enslaver, their town of residence and number of enslaved people in different age groups. This record was used for tax purposes, as slaves between the ages of 12 and 50 were subject to taxation.
